Josef

Role: Blind Monk / Embalmer / Silent Enforcer of Ritual

Arc / Description:
Josef is a blind, elderly monk who serves silently under Father Gregorius in the monastery’s shadowy catacombs. Emaciated and pale, with skin clinging to his bones, Josef’s eerie presence commands unease. He performs his duties without sight, guided by practiced routine and otherworldly calm.

He first appears when monks bring Antonio to the catacombs — under the pretense of offering him sanctuary. In reality, it is a ruse to lead Antonio into the presence of Don Atanasio. Josef guides Antonio wordlessly through the dark corridors to a secluded chamber where he meets the Don for the first time.

Later, he reappears to assist in the ritualistic mutilation of Guido, executing the brutal task of peeling his face with surgical detachment. His skill in embalming and disfigurement is unmatched, making him a feared, ghostlike figure in the Mafia’s inner sanctum — the silent hand of death and ritual. He says almost nothing, yet leaves unforgettable impressions on all who witness his work.

Outlook

Josef is extremely thin and skeletal, with nearly translucent skin stretched over sharp cheekbones. His eyes are lifeless and pale from blindness, giving him an expression of perpetual vacancy. He walks slowly, silently, his robes flowing like a shadow. Despite his frailty, his hands are steady and exacting — the hands of a master embalmer and ritualist.
